Enzytec develops In Vitro diagnostic reagent for canine Cystatin C detection

In partnership with the UFMG Veterinary School, the CEO of Enzytec, Dr. Márcio Lacerda, along with Prof. Dr. Fabiola Paes-Leme developed a reagent capable of measuring canine Cystatin C, an early marker in dogs prone to acute kidney injury.

To assess the presence of this marker, a study was carried out with twenty-eight hospitalized and critically ill dogs at the Veterinary Hospital. Right at the time of admission, when using the glomerular filtration rate to analyze the levels of Cystatin C, we already observed values below the reference, an early indication of an acute kidney injury. Even through this method it was possible to identify more cases than the conventional method described by the International Society of Renal Interest (IRIS) and serum creatinine.

Based on the data obtained from the tests and on scientific studies on the canine marker, Enzytec and UFMG were able to develop a functional and usual reagent in automated laboratory biochemistry equipment. Through this reagent it is possible to carry out early exams in dogs to avoid acute kidney injuries, improving the quality of life of man's best friend!
